There are so many image format available on web to use, one have to find out which image format have features for particular use. There is one image format TIFF, this one is best for printing purpose. Banner, flyer or any other printing on hard paper TIFF is the best one while JPG, PNG etc are great for web graphics.

Below we are giving short and sweet description of all kind of major image formats with it's best features and functionalities also also best of that format.


TIFF (.tif, .tiff)

Full form of TIFF is Tagged Image File Format. This image format is called lossless image files and specialty of that image is that it doesn't need compression or quality or information lose is not needed. This image type have option for compression up to certain level. These files are high in quality so large in size.

Best For: It is best to get High quality prints also for professional publications and for archival copies as well

Bitmap (.bmp)

Bitmap Image File also called BMP type of file is developed by IT giant company Microsoft for it's Windows Operating System. This BMP image type files are very high quality fiels and doesn't allow any kind of compression of information. These files are very large in sizes. BMP is a particular proprietary kind of format, so TIFF file formats are recommended in most cases.

JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)

JPEG, which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Groups is a “lossy” format meaning that the image is compressed to make a smaller file. The compression does create a loss in quality but this loss is generally not noticeable. JPEG files are very common on the Internet and JPEG is a popular format for digital cameras - making it ideal for web use and non-professional prints.

Full form of JPEG is Joint Photographic Experts Group is called a "loosy" format of image. The word loosy means, if we compress the image and try to make a smaller file, it may loose some of it's information. The good thing about that is when we compress the file it looses it's quality but in general eye sight, one can not notice it. JPEG files are most commonly used image type over internet and for general prints like not use in professional manner, this format is great.

GIF (.gif)

There is one more file type GIF that stands for Graphics Interchange Format. These files are mostly useful in graphics for the web. This image format is limited to 256 colors only and this can also display as animated images. GIFs are very useful as it can provide animation also small in size.


PNG (.png)

One more popular and widely used image format is PNG. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. This image type is called lossless image file format and it was mainly designed as replacement of GIF format. PNG image file format can use more than 15 million different kind of colors. The best part about this image format is it can save transparency.

EPS (.eps)

Image editing softwares like  CoralDraw, Adobe Illustrator can open this image file type EPS. EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript and is a vector type file generally.  Best attribute of this image type is it saves vactor information of any graphics and can be edited later by using above formats.

RAW Image Files (.raw, .cr2, .nef, .orf, .sr2, & many more)

There are many devices like digital SLR cameras that shoot and create a image format called RAW images. These RAW images are mainly unprocessed images that is created by some cameras and also by scanners. These raw images are something similar to old traditional camera netatives and they are boxed with many image data. They can be edited by some softwards like Photoshop etc.
